<image:title>Blog - How do bears hibernate? Bears in Winter Part 2 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>This is not what most people imagine when they picture a bear’s den, but hibernating black bears routinely den and give birth in the safe and sheltered environment of a hollow standing tree (note the young cub peeking up from under the mother). This image was captured as part of the long-running black bear study in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (photo: Frank T. van Manen, my internship supervisor at the University of Tennessee in 1993). A common den tree species was Tulip Poplar (also known as Tulip Tree, Liriodendron tulipifera), a fact that has stayed with me as I recommend this wonderful native tree to clients in New England 20+ years later.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A female black bear at her den in northern Maine (photo: Iain Stenhouse). My family and I were visiting this den as guests of the field crew of the Maine Black Bear Study in 2016. I had handled this bear as a 2 year-old in 1999, and again as a 4 year-old in 2001 when I was on the den crew. Seeing “Spunky” again at 19 years old — with her three healthy cubs — with my husband and young daughter in tow, was the joy of a lifetime!</image:caption>

These structures can be highly variable, artistic, and are most appropriate in urban habitats where natural nesting sites are lacking. You can see this for yourself on Route 26, just across the road from The Lodge at the Poland Spring Resort. The dense green thicket below the trees are all invasive honeysuckle shrubs, native to Asia, which have altogether out-competed the plants that should be growing in this forest.</image:caption>
